BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Organizers have canceled the rest of the Woolly Worm Festival activities on Sunday due to weather.

  • Organizers canceled activities on Sunday due to wind damage overnight
  • Wind destroyed around 40 percent of the tents
  • The 41st Banner Elk festival uses woolly worms to predict the season's winter weather forecast

Winds overnight destroyed around 40 percent of the tents at the festival.

Each person that attends races a woolly worm up a string to decide this year's winter prediction. The woolly worm that moves up the fastest makes this year's prediction.

There are 13 stripes on a woolly worm and 13 weeks of winter.
