ML-24, a leadership training group, is adding wheelchair-accessible furniture and a new pollination garden to City Lake Park in Albemarle. The goal is to help veterans with PTSD and other disabilities enjoy nature.

Sunday the group held a fundraiser to collect money for supplies. Their goal is to raise $5,000 before they start construction on October 27.

Bobbi Sheets, an Air Force veteran, says the park will be an escape for those facing an internal battle.

"A lot of people that have post-traumatic stress disorder that get anxiety over being in big groups of people, being out here in a very peaceful area calms them down," she said.

"[The veterans] were really thrilled there were folks that were out there wanting to help them, because oftentimes they're kind of working on their own. So I think just the fact that there were these folks that wanted to do it was very supportive of the work that they're doing," said Cathy Buckley, one of the members of ML-24.

ML-24 is looking for volunteers to help with the project build. They will be at the park on October 27 and November 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
