Roc City Hurling was founded back in 2013 by three brothers-in-law over a round of Guinness.

The youngest brother, Timothy Russel, had plans to move to the Flower City from Milwaukee but was disappointed to leave his hurling league behind.

The three then decided to start their own in Rochester.

The Gaelic game dates back over 3,000 years and is played with a ball and a stick. Players can score by putting the ball through uprights for a point, or into a net with a keeper for three points. Hurling has elements of soccer, lacrosse, hockey and rugby among other sports.

"There's so many sports that translate, so you don't need one skill, any one of those skills will translate and the rest of it just kind of comes naturally," said Bill McGuire, one of the league's founders.

The group plays year round and have developed an indoor version to sustain their passion during Rochester's cold winters.

The league is always welcoming new members and has sign up information available on its website.
