HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The Tubby Smith era is about to begin at High Point University.

  • Last year the team finished 14-16 under Scott Cherry
  • Smith has an overall record of 597-302
  • Season begins against Guilford College on Oct. 30

The Panthers returned nine players from last year's team that finished 14-16 under Scott Cherry. The veterans were brought in when the legendary coach was hired in March.

Smith has an overall record of 597-302, leading Kentucky to the 1998 national championship and making 20 postseason appearances and is one of two coaches to lead five programs to the NCAA tournament. His reputation proceeds him and it wasn't hard for the Panthers to buy in.

Smith graduated from the university in 1973 and his banner hangs in the Millis Center where the current players can see it during practice. The players have an expectation of more attention on a program that has never made the NCAA Tournament.

High Point made two appearances in the Division II NCAA Tournament. The expectations and excitement level is high and the players are ready to enter the Tubby Smith era. The season begins with an exhibition game against Guilford College on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
