RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – When you think of the North Carolina State Fair, food and rides are probably what comes to mind.

But for some students, the event is a chance to be rewarded for their livestock skills.

The fair draws farmers from across the state livestock competitions, including some students who participate in junior competitions.

Those who place in the top tier of their category have the chance to walk away with scholarships, and even cash.

“It gives me a drive to go to school and do my best there because if I didn't do well in school then I wouldn't be able to do this," said participant Josh Fletcher from Elizabeth City.

So far this year, more than three dozen students have received scholarships.
