FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A Fayetteville police officer remains in the hospital after being shot while off-duty Monday night.

On Wednesday, the SBI served a warrant on Joseph Edwards, 63, of Mississippi. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.

Edwards is being transferred to the Sampson County Jail.

Police say the shooting happened outside the city on Maxwell Road in the Clement Community on Monday.

The officer was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with serious injuries. As of Wednesday, he was listed in serious condition, but is still in the hospital.

A short time after the officer was taken away, Edwards was located in a parked car on Dunn Road. Officers attempted to speak with him, but he rammed their car at the officers causing them to have to open fire.

Edwards was then taken to the hospital.

The Fayetteville Police Department is asking for prayers for the officer as he attempts to recover.
