NORTH CAROLINA -- Leaves on the Blue Ridge Parkway bring people to the High Country, however that could change this season.

  • Higher temperatures are the cause, experts say
  • Some tourists say they are disappointed
  • Business owners are hoping for a late peak

Higher temperatures have prevented many leaves from changing.

“There's none. There's plenty of leaves but not the right color,” Don Jones from England said.

“It's kind of sad because you are looking for the beauty and the colors,” Donna Harris from Clayton said.

Experts say with the High Country having temperatures drop this week, there is still a chance for areas of the lower elevation to have some more leaves change but for higher elevated areas that chance has passed, which is leaving areas like Blowing Rock concerned.

“It's tough not to be able to control the color because it is the busiest time of year for us,” said Tracy Brown with Blowing Rock tourism.

“I'm hoping that Mother Nature has a late peak in store for us,” Final Touches owner Susan Vrikkis said.

They say while many people are still coming to Blowing Rock on weekends, many are disappointed.

“On weekends, it is busy but it's not like last year and the year before,” Aline Mosley with Cross Trade Imports said.

With the cold front coming this week these businesses say they are not giving up hope just yet and say there are many things for people to do in the area aside from looking at those leaves.
