A stretch of I-77 was closed after the body was found. Sunday night the fire department tweeted it was looking into a report of a "subject down" on the ramp at Exit 23 off I-77.

A short time later, police confirmed they were investigating a dead body found in a wooded area just off the interstate.

Huntersville's police chief said a driver spotted the body. "They could see it from the road and when they stopped and looked and realized what it was, then they contacted the police,” said Chief Cleveland Spruill.

There's no word yet on how the person died, and officials are working to positively identify the body and determine a cause of death.
