NORTH CAROLINA -- September was the third warmest month on record for the state. With the warmer temperatures in September, and here in early October, the leaf color change in our mountains is running behind schedule. Foliage experts suggest the color change is running about five days behind where we normally should be this time of year.

The graphic depicts the current leaf change as of Oct. 1, 2018.

"Blue Ridge Mountain Life" suggests the adjusted peak times for color:

  • Oct. 6-15: Peak time for areas above 5,000 feet
  • Oct. 15-25: Peak time for areas 4,000-5,000 feet
  • Oct. 24-31: Peak time for areas 3,000-4,000 feet
  • Oct. 29-Nov. 4: Peak time for areas below 2,000 feet
