CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- You can't miss those electric scooters zipping pass you around the Queen City.

  • The pilot rideshare program started in May
  • CATS see their relationship with e-scooters as a collaboration
  • There were more than 140,000 e-scooter rides in August

Since starting a pilot rideshare program this May, Charlotte's department of transportation has been tracking e-scooter rides and the numbers may surprise you.

There were 60,000 rides in June, 100,000 in July and then more than 140,000 e-scooter rides in August alone.

But what impact are these two-wheels having on other forms of transportation?

Members of the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) said they see their relationship with e-scooters as collaboration, not competition.

“We encourage scooters and the bikes to allow their devices to be put at our bike rakes at [CATS] stations and park and ride lots so that customers can enjoy that last trip either on a scooter on a bike,” said Olaf Kinard with the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).

CATS said they've seen an increase in ridership especially on the weekends since the blue line extension opened earlier this year.
