CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two years after the shooting of Keith Scott, his death and protests that followed continue to spark a heightened awareness of racial inequality in Charlotte, opening the door for a new generation of activists in the Queen City.

  • Darius Lockhart is a wrestler, spreading the message of Black Lives Matter through wrestling.
  • His outfit is Black Panther-inspired and he enters each match with his fist in the air.
  • He was listed by Pro Wrestling Illustrated as one of the Top 500 wrestlers in the world this year.

Charlotte native Darius Lockhart is spreading the message of the Black Lives Matter movement through the wrestling ring.

With an outfit inspired by a Black Panther militant, Lockhart enters every match with a fist in the air, shouting, “Be a revolutionary.” His trunks often feature an image of a raised fist, a chalk outline of a body, or #BlackLivesMatter.

“I remember there was people who decided not to book me because of it,” Lockhart said. “But I figured if they were people who didn't want to work with me because I was insistent on standing up for what I believe in, then I didn't want to work with them.”

“There may be someone in the crowd who totally disagrees with Back Lives matter...stuff like that,” wrestling promoter and owner of Premiere Wrestling Xperience, Brian Kanabroski said. “The difference is Darius still knows how to touch that person through wrestling.”

In August, Pro Wrestling Illustrated listed Darius Lockhart in its annual PWI 500 list of the Top 500 wrestlers in the world.
