WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Built in the 1800s, the Bellamy Mansion has lasted through wars, but Hurricane Florence gave it a different type of battle.

  • It could take almost $500,000 to repair damages
  • Volunteers are helping to clean up
  • They hope to open again next week

Winds from the storm took roof panels off causing water damage throughout the whole mansion.

Volunteers are helping to clean up, but with carpets and plaster about 150 years old, the museum is having to call in specialists. The non-profit says they need to make big decisions.

"On a scale of the damage that we just took on and the speed that it needs to be fixed in order to get it not to be permanently damaged, we kind of need all the help that we can get like right now," executive director Gareth Evans said.

The executive director estimates it could take almost $500,000 to completely fix the damages.

They hope to at least partially open again sometime next week.
