HARMONY, N.C. – A man is behind bars after police say he sexually and physically assaulted a woman in Iredell County.

  • Matthew Williams, 37, of Harmony has been arrested.
  • He is charged with sexually and physically assaulting a woman.
  • He's in jail under a $750,000 bond. 

According to the sheriff’s office, Iredell County Emergency Communications received a phone call just after 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 about a possible sexual assault. At the time, the caller reportedly was having difficulties communicating with the operator.

Police responded to the scene in Harmony where they spoke with a woman with several noticeable injuries who said she had been sexually assaulted.

Matthew James Williams, 37, who was also at the scene, was arrested.

Following interviews with other individuals in the residence, Williams was charged with the following:

  • Felony Second Degree Forcible Sexual Offense
  • Felony Attempted First Degree Forcible Rape
  • Misdemeanor Interfering with Emergency Communications
  • Misdemeanor Assault on a Female

Williams was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where he remains under a $750,000 secured bond.
