MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Dollar Tree, Inc. announced Tuesday that it will consolidate Family Dollar support centers in both Matthews and Chesapeake, Virginia.

  • Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015, is shuttering its support centers.
  • The Matthews distribution center will remain open.
  • The first Family Dollar was opened by Leon Levine in Charlotte.

Operations for Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015, will be set out of a new office tower in Chesapeake.

The company says the move is the latest in the integration of Family Dollar's "organization and support functions."

"Leadership from both banners has continued to work together to integrate our two organizations and invest in future growth. By bringing our teams together into one location, we will further improve our ability to support our stores more effectively through enhanced collaboration, communication and teamwork. The completion of our expanded headquarters in Virginia will facilitate the most important phase of the integration and we are excited about the opportunities ahead for the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar banners," said Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin in a statement.

"Our new 12-story, 510,000 square foot office tower represents the anchor of a dynamic campus environment serving the needs of our associates. We are eager to welcome all associates relocating to the Chesapeake area to participate in, and benefit from, the Company's next phase of growth," said Bob Sasser, Dollar Tree's Executive Chairman.

Consolidation will be complete by 2019. Though the Matthews headquarters will be closed, the distribution center in Matthews will stay open to serve the area Family Dollar stores.

In an email, Dollar Tree said no one lost their job Tuesday, or will lose their job by the end of the year. But nearly 200 positions will be eliminated, and 700 jobs will move to Dollar Tree's offices in Virginia by next fall.

The 700 employees currently in the positions moving to Virginia have been offered relocation packages if they choose to stay with the company.

In 2016, shortly after the company was bought by Dollar Tree, 370 positions were cut from the support center.

The first Family Dollar store opened on Central Avenue in Charlotte in 1959 by Charlotte businessman and philanthrophist, Leon Levine.
