LUMBERTON, N.C. -- Lumberton continues to be under a flash flood warning as water rises and rushes through the streets of the city.

There’s a mandatory evacuation of south Lumberton in effect and many people are seeking shelter.

A big concern is the Lumber River which the National Weather Service predicts could reach 24 feet Sunday.

Some people in the area still remember what they witnessed during Hurricane Matthew.

“I was actually caught in the last storm, Matthew, and it is not safe to stay in your house. I tried that last time and it was a huge failure, resident Sterling Arrington said.

Some also say the conditions make it hard to get around town.

“The roads are just really flooded and they’re just hard to drive. My car almost shut down three times just making it to this hotel to safety,” resident Travon McDowell said.

Four shelters are also open and Robeson County officials are urging residents in low-lying areas to get to one before the water rises too high.
