NATIONWIDE -- According to the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday, more than half of U.S. military veterans are not participating in the job market.

  • More than half of U.S. military vets aren't looking for jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • One of the biggest challenges for vets is for them to figure out how to market military experience
  • Veterans Bridge Home is hosting the Charlotte Military Hiring Expo at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Sept. 11

This week, Veterans Bridge Home prepared several vets for its military job fair, scheduled Sept. 11.

The group says one of the biggest challenges is teaching veterans how to market their military experience.

"[The Army doesn’t] teach you about job interviews. They don’t teach you how to network because your job is literally laid on on a sheet,” Army veteran Chris Neemann said. “When you come out into the civilian sector it's wide open."

For some of the nation’s oldest veterans, the unemployment rate is more than 20 percent higher than the national rate, according to BLS.

“So those folks that came out 10, 15, 20 years ago, they did not have the transition schooling, or education, or tools that are out there today,” Veterans Bridge home employment alliance director Paul Bill said.

Veterans Bridge Home hosts the Charlotte Military Hiring Expo at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Job seekers can register in person starting at 8:15 am, the day of the event, or pre-register here.
