ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Police in Rocky Mount are investigating after a man was found laying dead in the middle of a road Friday morning.

• A man was found laying dead in the middle of Park Avenue in Rocky Mount.
• The deceased has been identified as Allen Smith.
• There is no word on suspects at this time. 

According to the Rocky Mount Police Department, officers were responding to a shot spotter activation in the 200 block of Park Avenue near the campus of Edgecombe Community College just after 6:00 a.m.

Upon arrival they found Allen Jerome Smith, 42, laying unresponsive in the street.

Officers determined at arrival that Smith was deceased.

The Rocky Mount Homicide Unit was called to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

There is no word on suspects or motives at this time.
