CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some students are pushing back over UNC Charlotte’s decision not to pull Jerry Richardson's name off of the school’s football stadium.

The Student Government Association says it wants more information before they decide how to move forward. The speaker of the Student Senate, Matthew Basel, says the Board of Trustees’ decision to keep Richardson's name on the stadium happened behind closed doors.

There are some students that want the Board of Trustees to be more transparent in their rationale. Both the stadium and the field were named for Jerry Richardson after he donated $10 million to help start the 49ers football program.

The agreement which started in 2013 pays UNCC $1 million every year from 2013 until 2022.

Basel says the students understand the money makes this a complicated issue.

“When you're dealing with money, and you're dealing with naming rights and when you're dealing with sensitive information and sensitive topics like sexual and racial misconduct it's extremely important to recognize that it's never a yes or no answer and these situations take time,” said Basel.

During their meeting Thursday night, they voted to get other students involved in the debate by using surveys.

"It's going to be a few research questions in a format to be determined that are completely objective and unbiased that allows us to completely investigate the matter. It gives us more fire into make sure we get this right," Basel said.

How much students seem to care seems to be up in the air. Some had not heard of the controversy surrounding Richardson.
