CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department needs your help.

  • CMPD is looking to hire more than 170 new officers
  • Staffing levels are down 10 percent
  • Applications are up 35 percent

The department is looking to hire 170 new officers to fill its ranks. Staffing levels are down 10 percent, but the good news is that applications are up 35 percent this year.

"It's huge. I think we're turning a corner,” CMPD chief Kerr Putney said. “Let's be honest. This profession has been through a lot. This organization's been through a lot. We still do the work on the streets to connect to the diverse community that we are in Charlotte and I think we're starting to see the dividends in those who are applying."

Even though many apply, only a few will make it. Only five percent of applicants will go on to become officers.
