ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is seeing record enrollment numbers this year.

  • UNC-Pembroke saw a 14 percent increase in enrollment this year.
  • The incoming class is 56 percent larger than in 2017.
  • Reduced tuition costs may be to thank for the increase.

According to university officials, the school saw a 14 percent increase in student enrollment this fall, welcoming a freshman class of 1,233 and 838 new transfer students, a staggering 56 percent increase from fall 2017.

The university now has 7,100 students, topping its previous record of just under 7,000.

One factor that may be contributing to the rise is the reduction in tuition.

New at the university this year is the “N.C. Promise Tuition Plan” which significantly reduced tuition at UNC-P and two other universities.

The plan decreased in-state tuition costs to $500 per semester and out-of-state tuition to $2,500 per semester.
