SALISBURY, N.C. -- A group of advocates is urging Salisbury City Council for a second time to remove a Confederate statue from Downtown.

“Fighting for Confederate statues to stay up or not doing anything to help remove them, when clearly, clearly its a problem in the city,” said Salisbury resident John Leach.

Someone splashed white paint on the memorial known as “Fame” over the weekend. Now, some people are concerned this act of vandalism could be the beginning of more racial tensions

“Fame is that kind of match that will have us at each others throat,” said Rev. Olen Bruner, Trinity Presbyterian Church.

The general assembly has the power to approve whether to remove or relocate confederate statues. But Mayor Al Heggins said it's time for council to take a closer look at what they can do

“As a community we're going to have to engage in some collaborate problem solving to decide how we're going to handle this as a community, and look at what is really best for our community,” she said.

Heggins said the statue isn't city property, it's owned by the Daughters of the Confederacy.
