GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- Hundreds turned out for a meeting on plans to extend the Lynx Light Rail from Mecklenburg County into Gaston County Tuesday.

  • Gaston County residents say they want to see the light rail extended
  • They say traffic has become a problem and there is a lack of public transportation
  • CATS say they are leaning toward a silver route starting in Matthews

It’s one of the three remaining corridors left in the CATS Rapid Transit System Plan.

“I know that even if I go into downtown, I can be back to my car within a matter of minutes,” one attendee said.

Gaston County residents packed Gaston College auditorium Tuesday wanting information. Belmont city manager Adrian Miller says 65,000 vehicles frustratingly travel between Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties each day.

“So, they're stuck on I-85. They're stuck on Wilkinson Boulevard, so having rapid transit will give us another option,” she said.

Delta Sanders says they're often stuck with more than just traffic and that it’s a “lack of public transportation.”

CATS senior transit planner Jason Lawrence says they are leaning towards a silver route that would start in Matthews, travel through Charlotte and run mostly along Wilkinson Boulevard to Belmont. Allegany Street is an option too.

There would undoubtedly be some sort of access to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

As a reminder if you usually ride the light rail on the weekends the rail will be closed Saturday and Sunday so crews can complete some maintenance.
