CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s an effort to shave the number of Charlotte families that are food insecure.

  • Season Bennett started #CharlotteBarbersCare citywide food drive six years ago to make sure the food bank gets more goods
  • The drives have yielded more than 43,000 pounds of food for Charlotte families in need
  • You can donate through Aug. 25

At Headlines Barbershop in Charlotte, the barbers say the clients they keep looking clean sometimes come looking for a little more than a style – they also need support.

“The barber shop is really the staple of the black community, and the barber shop is a safe place where people can come talk about issues and help people,” Season Bennett said.

Bennett started #CharlotteBarbersCare citywide food drive six years ago to make sure the food bank gets more goods.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina estimates 14 percent of the county lives at or below the poverty line.

“Five dollars donated to the #charlottebarberscare food drive is 35 pounds of food, so it's just a very small amount that can make a huge difference in the community,” she said.

The drives have yielded more than 43,000 pounds of food for Charlotte families in need.

Just $1 equals seven pounds of food and a kindness that lasts longer after your cut.
