HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Some local priests are condemning the hundreds of clergy accused of abusing more than a thousand kids over 70 years in Pennsylvania.

  • St. Mark's will have a Mass of Reparation and holy hour for the sins committed by the leaders of the Catholic Church on Wednesday
  • One of the priests listed nationally is Robert Spangenberg
  • Before the reported abuse in Pennsylvania, Spangenberg worked at Saint James in Hamlet, North Carolina

Priests at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Huntersville spoke out this weekend to parishioners.

David Hains from the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte said in 2002 when similar allegations around the country surfaced the diocese made changes.

"Change the formation of the priests, say that we're sorry, dedicate background checks and training for everyone that works and volunteers in the church and we've paid $4 billion in settlements since 2002," said Diocese of Charlotte spokesperson David Hains.

St. Mark's will have a Mass of Reparation and holy hour for the sins committed by the leaders of the Catholic Church Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.

One of the priests listed nationally is Robert Spangenberg, who is accused of abusing at least two children when he worked in Pittsburgh.

The grand jury report details how Spangenberg paid a teenager in drugs, alcohol and money from the collection box for sex acts.

Before the reported abuse in Pennsylvania Spangenberg worked at Saint James in Hamlet, North Carolina in 1994. He died in 2006.

"We were told that this was a priest in good standing and that there weren't any issues. While he was a St. James no issues were reported," Hains said.

Despite that, Hains asks anyone who has heard of abuse to come forward.
