CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After we've enjoyed a fairly quiet work week across central North Carolina, we'll make the transition back to an unsettled forecast with daily chances for afternoon storms beginning Friday.

  • Unsettled weather returns to the forecast.
  • Humidity will also increase.
  • A cold front will move closer to the region for the weekend.

Moisture will begin to filter in and increase from the southwest today, allowing for a noticeable increase in humidity. With more moisture across the area will come an increase in our chances for afternoon storms. While most across the Piedmont should stay dry today, storms may bubble up by  as early as mid-afternoon in both the mountains and the Triad. The heat continues today, with highs soaring back into the 90s for many and heat indices pushing into the mid-90s for some during the peak daytime heating. Isolated to scattered storms will persist across the region through Friday evening.

Storms will fire up across the area again Saturday and Sunday as a cold front moves closer to the region. Though most should say under severe limits, we can't rule out an isolated strong to severe storm each day. Bottom line: stay weather away if you have outdoor weekend plans and go inside when you hear thunder! Temperatures will remain seasonable with highs in the upper 80s but dew points will remain in the 70s, making for muggy conditions.

Daily chances for storms will persist into next week as well, though we could see some drier weather by the second half of the work week. Stay tuned!
