CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Would you pay $15 for a concert when you don't know who's playing in it?

  • "Secret" concerts are popping up around Charlotte.
  • They cost $15.
  • You don't know who is playing.

That's exactly what's happening at Unknown Brewery in Charlotte.

Crowd of up to 200 are signing up to participate in these flash concerts. It's called Sofar Sounds.

The concept started in Europe and last year they came to the Queen City.

Three groups, a mix from Charlotte and across the country, perform and the concerts work on a lottery system.

If someone is selected, they find out the location, which have been everywhere from recording studios to living rooms, a day before the show.

But it's also unusual because of what attendees can not do.

"No being on your cell phone...show up for the first act, stay for the whole show, there's no headliner, every act we bring to the state is incredible," said Sofar Sounds City Leader Byron McClendon. "And the last one is no talking, no side conversations."

It may be a lot of rules for a concert so free wheeling, but the musicians and ticket holders are on board.

"They always mix it up. They don't have just rock, just jazz or just solo vocalists. They have a good variety of sound," said Ann Sutton, who attended her third Sofar Sounds show on Wednesday.

The goal, Sofar said, is to boost the local music scene, creating a space comfortable for both the musician and their potential new fans.

Sofar has three concerts a month and they're almost always sold out.
