BALLANTYNE, N.C. – When she sends sons Maxwell and Mason off to school, Kisha Meekins says she worries about their safety when they walk Ardrey Kell High School halls.

  • Schools officials say a news school is coming
  • Wilcox says schools are more segregated today
  • Superintendent Wilcox hopes specialized programming will create diverse classrooms

“The functionality of being able to move about safely in case of an emergency,” she says.

It's a concern Meekins voiced at the Ballantyne Breakfast Club’s back to school meeting.

CMS Superintendent Clayton Wilcox says a new school is on the way.

"We've started to kind of narrow down the number of properties where we can build a high school in this area,” he says. A new school in the Ballantyne area is set to open in 2023 to deal with high classrom size.

The superintendent says he hopes specialized programming, like STEM schools create diverse classrooms.

"The reality is schools today are more segregated than they have been at almost any time previously,” Wilcox says. “The board has worked hard in its student assignment plan to encourage people to voluntarily desegregate the community by participating in great programs we've launched across the system."

Meekins says, each student should have an equal experience no matter where they learn.
