BELMONT, N.C. -- Housing and Urban Development's ban on tobacco use inside public housing officially hit its roll-out deadline Tuesday.

  • Belmont Housing Authority made the switch in May to ban tobacco products
  • Tenants must be 25 feet away from their homes while smoking
  • HUD says the policy protects the health of residents and reduces maintenance costs

The Belmont Housing Authority made the switch in May. They handed out signs and mapped out their complexes. Tenants can smoke 25 feet away from their homes.

HUD's website dictated it doesn't only protect resident health, but the ban also reduces maintenance costs.

"When you share a wall with someone, whatever is going on in your apartment is going to go next door," said Flowers Court Apartments manager Erica Bobo.

Rollout varied across municipalities. Concord implemented its policies back in April 2017, but BHA's executive director wondered if the enforcement side of things and if the courts will uphold the rule.

"Are they going to evict a single mother with two to three children because someone was smoking on their porch," questioned Gary Foster.

Several other housing authorities had different policies. Charlotte, Gastonia and Fort Mill are exempt because they participate in a program called "Rental Assistance Demonstration." It means they're voucher units and are no longer considered public housing.
