DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. -- In honor of our fallen service members, runners are making their way through eastern North Carolina as part of a cross-country run to Arlington National Cemetery.

  • A run honoring fallen soldiers is going through eastern NC.
  • The run began in  Fort Irwin, California, and will conclude at Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Runners stop at each mile of the 6,100 mile route for a short ceremony where they call out the names.

America's Run for the Fallen is in 10th year.

It recognizes the nearly 20,000 service men and women who have died since the bombing of the USS Cole in October 2000.

Runners stop at each mile of the 6,100 mile route, through 19 states, for a short ceremony where they call out the names.

One Gold Star mother traveled all the way from Pennsylvania just to hear her son's name, Sergeant Michael Dylan Lopez.

"These guys are beating on that pavement, running through this heat, just appreciate them, honor my son, and thank everyone,” said Sue Quackenbush.  “This would have been my son's next duty station here at Camp Lejeune. This was where he was headed, so it's just important in a lot of ways."

The five month run began on April 7th in Fort Irwin, California, and will conclude in Arlington National Cemetery on August 5th.
