CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's been six years since the Democratic National Convention was held in Charlotte. During the convention, one woman's life was forever changed.

  • In 2012, the DNC partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build the "Legacy Home" in Charlotte
  • The Fennell's had applied for a home through Habitat, and were selected as the recipients of the Legacy House
  • Fennell says she still spends time with Habitat by going to new home groundbreakings and meeting with families

Darcel Fennell and her late husband lived in several apartments over the years, never owning a home.

In 2012, the DNC partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build the "Legacy Home" in Charlotte. The Fennell's had applied for a home through Habitat, and were selected as the recipients of the Legacy House.

Fennell says at 60-years-old she became a homeowner, and was able to help build the home of her dreams that changed her life.

"You see houses built, you see it on TV, but just to be a part of building your own home, and having a hammer and seeing how everything just comes together, it's like wow!" Fennell said.

Fennell says she still spends time with Habitat by going to new home groundbreakings and meeting with families.
