Sources tell NY1 that NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo is facing departmental charges for his role in the death of Eric Garner.
Sources say Pantaleo was formally charged Friday.
He will be prosecuted by the Civilian Complaint Review Board, which acts as a police watchdog.
Video of the incident went viral four years ago. You can hear Garner repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" while Pantaleo placed him in a chokehold.
The NYPD put its internal proceedings on hold while waiting for the Justice Department to determine if it was bringing charges in the case.
This week, the DOJ gave the NYPD the green light to move forward with its proceedings.
