CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC leaders are weighing in as several football players face suspension after the university reported an NCAA violation.

  • Chancellor Folt and Athletic Director Cunningham both talked about the reported violation.
  • Football players reportedly sold Tar Heel-issued merchandise.
  • They expect to hear back from the NCAA in two weeks.

They're accused of selling Tar Heel-issued merchandise.

Spectrum News spoke with Chancellor Carol Folt and the Director of Athletics, Bubba Cunningham this morning at the Board of Trustees.

They said they reported this violation to the NCAA once they found out about it.

Cunningham said that a few football players are accused of selling Tar Heel-issued shoes a few months ago.

He got word of it from social media and called it a "secondary" extra benefit violation.

Cunningham is still working out just how many players were involved and their punishment is still being worked out but suspension is a possibility.

This isn't the first time UNC has dealt with the NCAA.

Folt said she's dedicated to running a clean sports program and won't accept anything less.

"I have complete confidence in Bubba that we're doing every single thing right to make sure that we handle it, we deal with it properly and we do everything we can to make sure these things don't happen again. So, I'm always disappointed when we don't do exactly what we want to do, but If eel very confident about what we're doing to deal with it,” said Folt.

UNC expects to hear back from the NCAA within the next few weeks.
