IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- It's a tough day for Iredell County Sheriff's Office staff after two of their own were involved in a wreck Wednesday. One corporal didn't survive.

Sheriff Campbell says Cpl. Bill Wood was off duty riding his bike, his favorite pastime, on Taylorsville Highway when he was hit by a patrol car driven by deputy Justin Betts.

“Coming in today it's been very surreal," Sheriff Darren Campbell said. "[The officers] don't understand exactly, but they also understand the person that Cpl. Wood was and they understand that he want them to go on and continue to work and that's been the morning.”

Corporal Wood had a long history with the county, working in communications since 1993 and recently a supervisor in the detention center.

“[They were] not with the same agency, but you do work closely together, one was warrants and one was jail, so their paths often crossed,” the sheriff said.

Community members have stopped by to drop off food, cards and leave their condolences.

“He was just a very good, warm hearted soul. He would always asked about family. He's always asking about everybody else,”

Wood was also part of the patriot guard, an example of his love for the community.
