BURKE COUNTY -- An 18-month-old baby girl nearly drowned over the weekend at Lake James State Park.

  • Young boy pulled unconscious 18-month-old girl from water
  • Girl regained consciousness and vomited
  • Rangers urge parents to watch young kids if lifeguards aren't present

A park ranger said the toddler, Dulce Estrella Ajqui Toj was swimming at the Paddy Creek access Saturday afternoon when a young boy pulled her unconscious from the water.

Her father began tapping her back while two lifeguards ran to help.

The girl regained consciousness and vomited. She was taken to the hospital.

Rangers say it's important to keep an eye out on young kids even if lifeguards are present.

"Water safety is our utmost concern here at the park, and we recommend for children and even people that aren't great swimmers to wear a PFD, and certainly adult supervision is critical whether or not lifeguards are on duty. Somebody needs to be watching," said Park Ranger James Cameron, Lake James State Park.

Rangers say the incident is still under investigation. They haven't said if she was wearing a life jacket.
