BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A Burke County volunteer fire department lost three of its first responders to cancer.

  • Chief Harmon had been working on a memorial in front of the department to honor those who've served and those who have passed on, but he died before it could be finished
  • A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise money for the stone memorial
  • It will cost the department around $2,000

Chesterfield Fire and Rescue Chief Dean Harmon died just two weeks ago from colon cancer.

Chief Harmon had been working on a memorial in front of the department to honor those who've served and those who have passed on, but he died before it could be finished.

Now his name will be on the stone memorial along with Otis Perkins who died from prostate cancer, and Lieutenant James Robinson’s father, Tom Robinson, who had advanced melanoma.

"Dean, along with several senior members of the department, really wanted to give the community the option for members that used to be here that have left us and have gone on, to memorialize them around the fire department,” said Robinson.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise money for the stone memorial.

It will cost the department around $2,000.
