CHARLOTTE, N.C.  -- A Charlotte city councilman is asking for input from residents about the city's bid to host the Republican National Convention in 2020.

Right now, the only known finalists for the event are Charlotte and Las Vegas.

  • Councilman Braxton Winston wants to get public input on the possiblity of Charlotte hosting the RNC.
  • He says some people he has heard from are concerned.
  • A final decision on the RNC host city is expected later this summer.

Braxton Winston says he has heard from many people who are concerned about Charlotte hosting the event.

He's asking for a public forum to discuss the event and all that may come along with it, because it is “more than just an economic development decision.”

"Many of my constituents that have contacted me believe that the values of this party do not represent the spoken priorities of this city -- those that include affordable housing, investment in transportation infrastructure and sustainable and green policies,” he said in part.

The final decision on the RNC host city is expected later this summer.
