WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A woman is dead after a house fire in Winston-Salem Monday night.

It happened on Ader Drive off of White Rock Road.

  • Officials found a woman's body in the house after the fire was put out.
  • A neighbor called 911 around 11:30 Monday night.
  • An autopsy is being completed to officially determine if she died from the fire.

Fire investigators determined that the most probable cause of this house fire was improper disposal of smoking material. Officials say a next door neighbor called 911 around 11:30 Monday night, and when firefighters arrived, there were heavy flames concentrated in the right rear bedroom of the house.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters searched the home and found one female victim in the bedroom.

They can’t confirm if the fire was in fact the cause of her death.  Her body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Officials say she was the only one home at the time of the blaze besides her two dogs and a cat. All of the animals are okay.

Most of the damage to the home is concentrated in the back bedroom, but fire investigators say there is water damage and other damage from the fire’s heat throughout.

Fire investigators say they have to wait until the autopsy results from the medical examiner’s office before they can officially close the case.
