CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two men are facing charges following an incident in west Charlotte early Tuesday morning.

  • Zevaguis and Deveno Sturgis have been arrested in connection with the incident.
  • The two were recently arrested on drug and gun charges.
  • The officer, who was drug over 100 yards, was not seriously hurt.

Officers were patrolling Maribel Avenue near Hildebrand Street when they noticed a truck and two men inside that they had recently arrested on drug and gun charges.

When police got closer, they say they saw drug paraphernalia inside and tried to detain the men, identified as Zevaguis and Deveno Sturgis.

They say Zevaguis Sturgis got out of the car and ran off. The driver of the car, Deveno Sturgis, started reaching down to the passenger side of the SUV.

One of the officers leaned into the car to stop him, and police say that's when the driver started the SUV and drove off -- with the officer halfway in the car.

The car traveled over 100 yards before it crashed into a tree further down the road. The officer was not seriously hurt.

Both men were arrested and taken to CMPD headquarters, where they face a slew of charges.
