RALEIGH, N.C. -- Thirty four protesters were zip tied and arrested at the General Assembly.

  • Protesters were part of the Poor People's Campaign
  • Organizers say they are fighting for inequality in the state
  • The charges for the people arrested today range from trespassing to disrupting a public meeting

The protesters were part of the Poor People's Campaign, which is led by religious leaders coming from all over the state.

The arrests happened in three different places outside of the House of Chamber doors, the Senate Rules Committee and Speaker Moore's office.

Organizers say they are fighting against inequality in the state with a focus on fighting for minimum wage and affordable housing.

"People believe very powerfully in rights of conscious, freedom of expression, and the first amendment," stated Gene Nichol. "They believe it is unworthy to have a government, which is simply an agent for the wealthiest among us."

The charges for the people arrested range from trespassing to disrupting a public meeting.
