RALEIGH – Officials now say it will take months to fix a massive sinkhole on Newton Road in Raleigh.

  • Sinkhole formed Monday after heavy rains.
  • Originally, crews hoped to have it fixed this week.
  • Drivers should follow detours.

A huge chunk of the street washed away during Monday's flash flooding.

The city announced repair work will start in June and should be finished in August.

Newton Road runs between Falls of Neuse and Six Forks Road.

Drivers are advised to stay away from the area.

Detours are in place as follows:

  • Drivers heading west on Newton Road, turn left on Van Thomas Drive, right on Woodbend Drive and back onto Six Forks Road.
  • Drivers heading north on Six Forks Road turn right on Woodbend Drive, left on Van Thomas Drive and right onto Newton Road.
  • Drivers heading south on Six Forks Road turn left on Woodbend Drive, left on Van Thomas Drive and right onto Newton Road.
