MOORESVILLE, NC – A Mooresville mother is suing an Arizona Mellow Mushroom after her two daughters were hit and killed by one of its customers last year.

  • Two daughters on a trip to the Grand Canyon died in a fatal crash
  • The driver had been drinking at a Mellow Mushroom
  • A North Carolina mother is blaming the restaurant for not intervening

Cathy Hocking’s daughters, Karli and Kelsey Richardson, were driving to the Grand Canyon last April to see the sunrise. The two were hit head-on by a drunk driver, a 21-year-old college student. All three of them died instantly.

An Arizona liquor license report shows the driver, Keaton Allison, had been drinking at Mellow Mushroom with some friends and had a blood alcohol content of .25 percent.

Hocking blames the restaurant for letting Allison drive after drinking too much. She said this lawsuit is about holding bars more accountable.

“You're responsible for who's in there, who's drinking and how they stumble out, you are,” said Hocking. “We all know it and it’s the law in every single state."

Since her daughter's deaths, Hocking has been using her story to spread awareness by talking on the radio and with college students.

“I talk about ‘ok, if you're in that situation and they won't give you their keys, they won’t get in the car, what do you do to make them not leave,” explained Hocking.
