YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. -- The manhunt is now over for a 22-year-old wanted in connection to a car chase that claimed the life of a State Highway Patrol trooper.

After an extensive search, 22-year-old Dakota Whitt – is now behind bars.

He faces a list of charges including: murder, fleeing to elude, and driving with a revoked license.

State Highway Patrol says Whitt is responsible for leading troopers on the car chase that resulted in the death of trooper Samuel Bullard in Yadkin County, west of Winston-Salem .

It all started at a checkpoint. Officials say Trooper Bullard was helping another trooper at a checkpoint in Surry county Monday night when Whitt fled.  

After a short chase on I-77, the lead trooper noticed he lost Bullard and circled back around to find his car engulfed in flames and Bullard trapped inside.        

Trooper Bullard died at the scene. He was 24-years-old and a three-year veteran of the Highway Patrol.

Whitt was denied bond in court on Tuesday.
