WAKE COUNTY, N.C. –  The State Highway Patrol now says two people were killed in a wreck involving a church van and a car in northern Wake County.

  • Accident happened on Zebulon Road near Barham Siding Road.
  • One vehicle ended up in a creek.
  • Two people were killed.

The crash happened on N.C. Highway 96 near just south of U.S. Highway 401 in Rolesville around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers say the van from First Missionary Baptist Church in Smithfield lost control after striking a deer.

The van eventually collided head on with an SUV driven by 62-year-old Deborah Powell, of Roxboro. After impact, the SUV was submerged in a creek.

Powell was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the van, 84-year-old William Henderson Clayton, also died.

Friends of Clayton said he was a great man in the community and he will most definitely be missed.

“I can remember when I was younger I was in the 4H and he was the one who taught me how to plant tomato plants in a milk carton box,” said Arnetta Cooley.

“He was over there just about every day cleaning up or doing something,” said Lela Carroll. “He would come over and see how I was doing. He was a nice person.”

Five passengers of the church van were taken to WakeMed. Six other passengers of the van were sent to Duke Medical Center. All were listed in serious condition.

The driver of the van, Edward Lee Barfield, was transported by helicopter to WakeMed in critical condition.

Troopers say charges are possible, and will be discussed with the Wake County District Attorney's Office.
