CHARLOTTE -- At an annual Peace Officers Memorial Service in Charlotte, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office honored Captain Anthony Stancil.

  • The Mecklinburg Sheriff's Office is remembering Captain Anthony Stancil.
  • Captain Stancil died in 1998 after being shot by a shoplifter at Harris Teeter. 
  • Stancil's son hopes to be a deputy, just like his father.

This September marks 20 years since Stancil died. He was working off-duty security at a Harris Teeter when a shoplifter shot him in the parking lot.

His family was in attendance Friday, including 22-year-old son Malik, who recently graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy and works as a detention officer.

 

 

 

Mom, Stephanie, reflected on her husband’s legacy.

"Even though he's not here to be with his children and see them grow up, we are all honored and blessed to have known him,” said Stephanie Stancil.

Malik Stancil hopes to eventually become a deputy, just like his father.
