CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Members of the Republican National Convention Site Selection Committee stopped in the Queen City and were given the "red carpet treatment" while surveying the area as a potential host for the 2020 convention.

This week, 20 members from the committee met with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and state's Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes. For three days they visited hotels, the Spectrum Center, NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Charlotte Motor Speedway which is where they had dinner Thursday night.

Members saw presentations from city officials, police and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority regarding crowd control and parking. They also talked about how they could come up with thousands of volunteers and private fundraising to foot the nearly $70 million bill to host the event.

"Over the past three days, I have had the pleasure of working with Mayor Vi Lyles, her team, and a number of Charlotte officials making a presentation to the RNC Site Selection Committee. I could not be more proud of their efforts, professionalism, and hospitality. They and the CRVA have put on an all-star presentation highlighting the benefits of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and surrounding areas in the state of North Carolina. I look forward to the decision of the Site Selection Committee. Based on merit, I think we have a great chance of winning the competition," Hayes said.

Officials believe Charlotte has a chance as Las Vegas and an unnamed city in Texas compete to be the host city. Next, they say the committee will likely make a recommendation to President Trump this summer during the RNC summer meeting in late July.
