CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A picture of Detective Mike Doty was revealed on NASCAR driver Joey Gase’s car, which he plans to race in next week’s Alsco 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

  • Doty donated kidneys to two people after death
  • Alsco 300 happening May 26

Family and coworkers of Doty attended the unveiling, and got to put their handprints and written letters on the hood of the #35 car.

“No matter how dark a situation seems, if you look hard enough and long enough, a spot of light. This is one of those spots of lights that became huge," said Mike's father, Bob Doty.

Organ donation brought the two groups together. After his death, Doty was able to save two lives with his kidneys. Gase’s late mother was also a donor. Life Share of the Carolinas plans to sponsor Gase's car in the race.

“When they [spectators] see those handprints on the car, or Mike’s photo and they stop and ask why it's on there. We get to tell them about Mike, why he’s a hero, and why organ donation is so important," said Gase.

Doty's family is invited to watch the race from Team Gase's pit box. The Alsco 300 takes place on Saturday, May 26.
