LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. -- School in Lincoln County will go on as planned Wednesday.

  • Some teachers can't afford to take off
  • Those who take off must pay $50 to substitute teacher
  • Newton-Conover City Schools also not closing

About 20 teachers plan on taking the day off for the rally, but others say they can't afford to.

"That is a huge issue actually is affordability, some teachers...we don't know the socio-economic situation, just like with our students, whether they can even afford to give up that day," said English teacher Bradley Setzer.

Those who plan to take the day off must pay substitutes $50, if there's a personal day to give.

For districts who decided to close, those teachers will not have to pay. Catawba County had 127 teachers request off but say they have plenty of subs to cover the day.

Newton-Conover City Schools is also not closing from lack of absences.
