NORTH CAROLINA -- Mother's Day afternoon will feel a lot more like the 4th of July across North Carolina.

  • Much of the state will return to 90s Sunday
  • A few locations could tie or break the record high
  • Monday's weather will also be sunny and hot

Average high temperatures are still in the upper 70s to near 80 this time of year, but much of the state will return to the 90s Sunday afternoon.  A few locations across the state could even tie or break the record high for the date.

Here are the records to watch Sunday afternoon:

  • Asheville: 90 (1993)
  • Charlotte: 93 (1881)
  • Fayetteville: 95 (2000)
  • Greensboro: 94 (1914)
  • Hatteras: 83 (1991)
  • Raleigh: 93 (2000)
  • Wilmington: 95 (2000)

Mostly sunny conditions are expected through the day Sunday with a 20% chance or less for an isolated late day storm.  The best place to try to beat the heat will be in the mountains or the beaches where highs will warm just to the 80s.

Monday's weather will be very similar to this weekend - mostly sunny and hot.

An unsettled weather pattern will then begin across the state starting Tuesday and continuing through the rest of the week.  That pattern will favor more widespread showers and storms each afternoon and evening.
