NATIONWIDE -- The National Retail Federation says it is expecting people to spend more than $23 billion dollars preparing for Mother's Day with $2.6 billion going towards flowers.

  • Use a credit card online when making purchases
  • Be aware of the seller's terms and conditions
  • Watch out for hidden fees

The Better Business Bureau wants to warn those last minute shoppers to take a step back before ordering online.

"I think one danger when you're ordering something online or over the phone any hidden fees that might get snuck in,” says Lechelle Yates with BBB. “So if you are ordering something online maybe just look at the terms and conditions before you say yes this is exactly what I want to order."

The agency says if you must order online use your credit card so you can dispute it in case the flowers you order don't come in on time or they aren't fresh.

BBB offers the following advice for choosing a florist:

Check first with BBB. Found a great deal online? Before placing an order head to bbb.org to read past customer reviews and experiences.

Order early. Florists will be very busy on Mother’s Day and the selection of good quality flowers will dwindle as the day approaches. To ensure a stress-free delivery, consider placing your order earlier in the week.

Avoid hidden costs. It’s always a good idea, whether a holiday or not, to verify your order and total cost with a florist before placing your order. Some online florists may add on shipping and handling costs without you knowing.

Pay with credit card. Unfortunately, some flower arrangements are never delivered or your recipient might receive the wrong flowers. In either case, you could possibly dispute the charge if you pay with a credit card.

Keep documentation of your order.  After placing an order, you may be directed to a final confirmation page or you may receive a confirmation. Print or save that information and keep it handy in case you need it later.
