CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators says momentum is growing for CMS teachers to join the statewide advocacy rally on May 16 in Raleigh.

  • Statewide teacher rally held May 16 in Raleigh
  • Some districts are planning to close school for students during rally
  • Teachers to pay a $50 "required substitute deduction"

The group says teachers are taking personal days to fight for better pay and resources. As long as a substitute is available, state law gives teachers the right to take a personal days with at least five days’ notice. However, teachers also have to pay a $50 "required substitute deduction” for using the day.

“So, that tells you how important this is and how this is the time that educators know this is the place they must be in order to effect the change they want to see,” Erlene Lyde, president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators, said.

CMS leaders say the district will not cancel school on May 16, but they'll line up as many substitute teachers as possible. If necessary they say they will pull CMS administrators to fill in.
